The solution or answer to that issue that I tell corporate mindfulness clients is: the mind is made to wander. It’s natural for our minds to bounce around, from topic to memory to future planning.
So our choice is to not focus on “fighting” the mind’s tendencies. That is the first huge step as it creates relaxation and sense of “ok I’m not failing at this.” As corporate mindfulness coach that is often the first step- dismantling expectations & beliefs about mindfulness meditation practices.
That then allows each person to start where they are and begin to observe more calmly, where does my mind go?
What thoughts or feelings are preoccupying me?
Then with mindfulness practice- over time individuals become better able to:
1. calmly observe thoughts without getting “caught” in them.
2. With increased relaxation and acceptance the mind automatically begins to calm down.
An analogy is a pristine lake when their is no wind blowing. The lake is like a mirror, clear and calm. It’s easy to see to the bottom. The wind in this case is the tension and fighting of thoughts…the lake (our minds;) will automatically begin to be less turbulent and settle…with practice and right attitude.
