Common Meditation Block #4

In today’s Mindfulness Monday, I’m sharing a common issue when we try to meditate. Especially if you attempt to sit crossed legged on the floor: pain.

Since we in the West don’t generally sit on the floor or squat, our hips and knees get very tight, but of course we have enough flexibility to sit in chairs. That is a flexed position for the hips and a relatively easy bend for the knees.

So trying to sit cross legged on a cushion requires hips that are fairly flexible in outward rotation and knees that can flex quite acutely.

For clients I work with them to get more comfortable this way:
-sit up on a cushion, so the butt is lifted
-place cushions under the knees as they will likely be elevated. And ankles are just lightly crossed.
-the elevated hips will tilt the pelvis and usually help comfort
or,
just sit in a straight backed chair with feet flat, hip distance apart. And perhaps a cushion behind your lower-mid back so you are sitting upright (upper back away from the chair back.)

And finally discomfort usually goes away over time, as your body gets used to it. There are also simple stretches that I teach my clients.
